Hello! My name is Cole. I am a first year master’s student in the Graduate School of Information Sciences at Tohoku University. I graduated in the summer of 2024 from North Carolina State University in Raleigh, North Carolina with a Bachelor’s of Science in Statistics. I am interested in the fundamental mathematics / statistics of machine learning, as well as the ethical and expert use of artificial intelligence in interdisciplinary scenarios. In general, my research interests are heading in the direction of Bayesian Learning/Optimization, (and by extension) Gaussian Processes, deep learning, and interdisciplinary applications of AI. I am also a member of Yamada Lab, an artificial intelligence focused laboratory in the GSIS.
I am originally from Charlotte, North Carolina, but have also lived in Raleigh, Nagoya, and now Sendai. I found myself intrigued by the Japanese language and culture while an undergraduate and was fortunate to spend my Junior (3rd) year of studies in Nagoya, a beautiful and peaceful city along the eastern coast between Tokyo and Osaka. Naturally, I was interested in finding my way back to Japan and began looking for graduate school opporitunities abroad. Long story short, I am now in a PhD program at Tohoku University in Sendai, just 1.5 hours north of Tokyo by bullet train.
In addition to my studies, I love music, video games, sports, and other little activities. I began producing my own music when I was in middle school and have self-taught myself the ins and outs of production and engineering, as well as picking up some piano and guitar. I used to use FL Studio but now use Ableton Live as my main DAW. As for video games, I am a huge fan of Counter-Strike and the Esports scene surrounding the game. My favorite player is Elige, and as so I have recently become a fan of Faze. Recently, I have also been playing Kingdom Come Deliverance II. I love watching soccer and particularly like watching English Premier League (when the games aren’t at 5am!) and have recently become a fan of Brighton. I have a Minolta 500si and like to take pictures with it every so often.
